Mr. James Santana, Principal of Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest is proud to announce that the Chinese program at Northern Valley Demarest recently hosted Tenakill Middle School, Mahwah High School, and Fort Lee High School for a Chinese New Year’s celebration. The half-day event started with warm welcomes from NVD Principal James Santana in Chinese and Chinese teacher and Chinese Club advisor Lily Lee in the auditorium. The NVD Chinese club student hosts also briefly welcomed the students before ushering them into the cafeteria for an extravagant buffet featuring popular Chinese dishes and candy. The students then were treated to performances by the NVD Chinese club, such as choreographed dances, a Chinese yo-yo demonstration, and Chinese songs where the middle school students were welcome to join in.

Following the food and performances, the visiting students tried their hands at traditional Chinese practices, such as origami and Chinese knotting, and also some not so traditional activities like tug of war. The students also learned how to make traditional Chinese dumplings and had the opportunity to make and eat their own. The action-packed afternoon ended for the visitors as they returned to their towns, but continued for the NVD Chinese club as they hosted a club meeting for their high school members.
