Chapter 3 Section Review Questions
3.1 page 35

1. The building blocks in your body are cells.
2. All cells are not alike.  Some cells release energy while some cells carry messages to the brain.
3. Robert Hooke saw tiny openings in cork under his microscope.

3.2 page 39

1. The cytoplasm is the part of cell where most chemical reactions take place.
2. The nucleus is the part of the cell that controls the other parts.
3.  The vacuole is the part of the cell that stores waste.

Critical Thinking:  Why are cells called the building blocks of life?
Cells are called the building blocks of life because all living things are made of one or more cells.

3.3 page 45

1. Three ways in which plant cells are different from animal cells are; plant cells have chloroplasts, a cell wall around their cell membranes, and fewer but larger vacuoles.
2. The two different groups that body cells are organized into are tissues and organs.
3.  The four stages of mitosis are; prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.

Critical Thinking:  Difference between meiosis and mitosis:
In mitosis there is only once cell division.  In meiosis, there are two cell divisions.  Mitosis produces two daughter cells that are identical to the parent cell.  Meiosis produces four daughter cells that have only half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell.
