NVOT Lockdown Lifted Following Police Investigation and Apprehension

OLD TAPPAN, NJ – Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan was placed in immediate lockdown today at approximately 11:30 am after a student reported that another student currently in the building may have been in possession of a weapon. School administrators immediately implemented safety protocols, and law enforcement promptly responded.

Local law enforcement agencies, including Old Tappan, Northvale, Norwood, Harrington Park, Closter, River Vale police departments, along with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and the Bergen County SWAT Team, responded promptly and assumed control of the situation.

The student in question was swiftly located, apprehended, and taken into police custody. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the student was in possession of a CO2 Air Pistol.

Following the apprehension, a sweep of the building was conducted by the Bergen County K-9 Unit. Shortly before 1:00 pm, after a comprehensive sweep, the building was officially deemed safe, and the lockdown was lifted. Counseling services were made available to students, and additional support will continue to be offered.

"We want to thank the responding local police departments, Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, and Bergen County SWAT Team who responded in such a professional and decisive manner," said Superintendent James Santana. "We also want to commend our students and staff for their exemplary cooperation in following the district’s lockdown procedures during this high-stress event."

Chief Kathryn Weaver added, "The rapid response from our local and county partners ensured that this situation was resolved safely and quickly. The suspect was apprehended in possession of a CO2 Air Pistol.  A thorough investigation was completed, and the suspect will be charged with threat and weapon offenses.  Our department treats every report with the utmost seriousness to ensure the protection of our students, staff, and schools."

The District and the Old Tappan Police Department use this opportunity to remind all students, parents, and community members always to remain vigilant: If you see something, say something. This situation is a great example of how engaging in this practice keeps people safe.
